Description
Although the trail begins 20 kilometers to the west, the gateway to Alberta's Iron Horse Trail awaits you in the charming town of Smoky Lake. The staging area is located at the intersection of Main Street and Railway Avenue. It is the western-most staging area for the Iron Horse Trail. The staging area includes maps, washrooms, picnic tables and off loading ramps. Parking is free and needed supplies are available from businesses close by.
This 'rail to trail' heads east for over 300 kilometers, down a historic route through the heart of northeast Alberta through parkland, boreal forest, wetlands and sand dunes. It is open year-round to walkers, cyclists (fat tires help), horses and off-road vehicles.
Alberta's Iron Horse Trail is an unsupervised backcountry trail, so planning is essential.
