Description

The Forty Mile townsite is part of the Forty Mile, Fort Cudahy and Fort Constantine Historic Site. The site is located at the mouth of the Fortymile River where it empties into the Yukon River, 67 km upstream from the Alaska/Yukon border and 88 km downriver from Dawson City. Generations of First Nation people camped at the mouth of the Fortymile River to hunt and fish in the area. In response to a gold discovery in the upper Fortymile drainage in 1886, miners and traders arrived to establish the first Yukon town. Take the walking tour of the townsite. The Forty Mile townsite now includes twelve standing buildings, a cemetery, an old cable tramway and some mining, farming and sternwheeler artifacts. The abandoned cabins were a source of building materials and firewood for the remaining residents as the population waned. Camp only in the designated camping area.

Plenty of space for big vehicles and trailers. The historic town is well worth the 1km easy hike. Lots of mosquitoes.
